Gijs van Leeuwen, clarinetist and clarinet teacher, founder of WoodWindDesign, started making clarinet stands in the early 2000’s. The extremely compact case for his Schwenk&Seggelke Bb and A clarinets did not accept any of the available compact in-bell-transport stands on the market, so Gijs just decided to make his own stands. Carbon legs with magnets were there from the start, but unlike the current clarinet stands the body of the first stands was made with precious woods. African Blackwood of course, and Cocobolo, but also lesser known timbers such as the magnificent Karelian Birch and Thuya Burl. Students asked for similar stands, and that was is. At first.
But with the purchase of a bass clarinet, combined with the wish to travel on bike with bass, Bb and A -as we are accustomed to in the Netherlands- (accustomed to biking, no necessarily B,A and bass clarinet) a new problem occurred. Hauling the bulky 2 kilo stands that were available was out of the question, and experiments were getting serious, aluminum at first, but soon more carbon.
Colleagues liked my solution and started ordering, Michael Lowenstern make a review video, comparing the WoodWindDesign stand with the competition, and things really started off.
Downside: to really start off, I needed to sell my beautifull Schwenk&Seggelke bass clarinet, in order to have parts for the bass clarinet stand injection molded.
The current portfolio of clarinet stands covers almost the complete family from Eb to contrabass. Gijs hasn’t been asked to build a stand for the Picksüßes Holzl. Yet.
The small Eb and Bb stands weigh 30 grams only (1 ounce) and collapsed they fit inside the bell-lower joint of the instrument, depending on the lay-out of your instrument case.
Another option is between the upper and lower joint in the case, because the complete stand is as small as a white board marker. The very narrow but strong legs are attached to the body with magnets. The beautiful exclusive and exquisite wooden stands are no longer in production, as demand was low after the introduction of the next generation of carbon clarinet stands.
The stands for alto, bassethorn, bass clarinets (400 grams, 0.9 pound) and contrabasses (Paperclip and Eppelsheim) have a beautiful, innovative modular system of nesting carbon tubes combined with propriatary parts. All the parts fit inside the instrument, and inside the instrument case.
